Nick Winters serves as an Assistant Professor of Classics in the Department of Classics within the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University. His office is located in Kresge Hall Room 4367, and he can be reached at nick.winters@northwestern.edu.
He earned his PhD from Duke University in 2020 with a dissertation titled "Schools of Greek Mathematical Practice", which proposed a major revision to the history of Greek mathematics by organizing ancient texts into networks of information transmission and methodology.
Dr. Winters' research spans ancient mathematical practices, reconstructing transmission networks across Greek scientific traditions. His interdisciplinary work extends to ancient medicine, music theory, engineering, and practical sciences including surveying, accounting, weaving, textile arts, timekeeping, and navigation. He also investigates the history of books and textual scholarship, ancient gender and sexuality studies, and Greek and Roman historiography.
His notable recognitions include:
