Nick Tobier is a Professor at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan. He also holds affiliations with the International Institute (CREES Faculty Associate, WCEE Faculty) and the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia. His academic journey includes an MFA from Bard College (1997), graduate work in landscape architecture at Harvard (1997–1999), and a BA in History and Art from Swarthmore College (1989).
His research focuses on public spaces as sites for unexpected, collaborative projects that challenge routine urban experiences. Notable initiatives include the Brightmoor Maker Space (since 2011), entrepreneurial ventures like F.O.O.D. (Field of Our Dreams), and exhibitions at MOMA, the Smithsonian, and international biennials. Tobier emphasizes community partnerships, working with artists, designers, and diverse groups in Detroit, Tokyo, Brussels, and beyond.
His awards include grants from the NEA (2015, 2017, 2022), Harpo Foundation (2011), and Graham Foundation (2021). Published works include Utopia Toolbox (2016) and Looping Detroit (2017). Current projects explore democratic public space design through participatory frameworks.
