Nick Smith is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Texas Tech University, where he leads the Smith EcoPhys Lab. His research focuses on plant physiological and ecological responses to climate change, integrating experimental data with modeling to understand global carbon and water cycles.
Research Interests:
- Plant responses to climate change (warming, elevated CO₂, drought)
- Photosynthetic and respiratory acclimation
- Leaf economic traits and nutrient allocation
- Ecosystem modeling and carbon-climate feedbacks
- Global patterns in plant function and trait optimization
His recent work analyzes photosynthetic acclimation, leaf nitrogen use, and ecosystem carbon storage using optimality theory and large-scale datasets. He frequently collaborates on global synthesis projects and contributes to Earth system models.
Scientific Contributions:
- Developed and applied the P-model for gross primary production
- Contributed to the TRY plant trait database
- Published in top journals including Nature Climate Change, Science, Global Change Biology, and New Phytologist
Nick Smith advises multiple graduate students and postdocs, fostering interdisciplinary research in plant ecology and global change. His lab integrates field experiments, physiological measurements, and computational modeling. He is actively involved in national assessments, including the U.S. National Climate Assessment.
