Dr. Nick Schutgens is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Science, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He holds a PhD in astrophysics from Utrecht University (1998) and transitioned to Earth science, focusing on atmospheric composition. His research addresses aerosol impacts on climate, biosphere, and health, integrating models and satellite observations. Key collaborations include SRON (aerosol climate impacts) and TNO (air quality impacts), and membership in AEROCOM's Scientific Steering Committee.
Research interests span aerosol properties, biomass burning emissions, and inverse emission estimation. He uses models like ECHAM-HAM and LOTOS-EUROS, alongside satellite data (MODIS, CALIOP) and in-situ networks (ACTRIS). Recent projects include AVENGERS WP3 (aerosol radiative forcing) and data assimilation for aerosol tracking. Teaching includes courses on Climate Science and Environmental Remote Sensing.
His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and environmental protection. Ongoing efforts involve developing ensemble Kalman filters and preparing for new satellite missions like SPEXone.
