Prof. Larry Di Girolamo is the Blue Waters Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Illinois, affiliated with the School of Earth, Society & Environment and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). His research focuses on cloud, aerosol, and radiation processes, with expertise in satellite remote sensing and 3D radiative transfer models. He leads the Di Girolamo Research Group, collaborating with NASA and JPL on missions like MISR, MAIA, and MODIS. His work addresses climate variability, aerosol impacts on human health, and big data challenges in Earth science.
Education: Ph.D. in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (McGill University, 1996), M.Sc. (McGill, 1992), B.Sc. in Astrophysics (Queen's University, 1989).
Research interests include multi-angle remote sensing technologies, cloud-aerosol interactions, and global climate change. His group participates in field campaigns like CAMP2Ex and develops tools like the Terra Fusion project to integrate petabyte-scale satellite data.
Awards include the Sheth Distinguished Faculty Award, William T. Pecora Group Award, and Blue Waters Professorship. He teaches courses on atmospheric radiation, remote sensing, and professional development.
Key projects: Terra Fusion (processing petabyte-scale data), MISR mission contributions, and MAIA satellite aerosol research. Collaborations with NCSA address computational challenges in Earth science.
