Nick Hawkins is a part-time PhD Candidate in the Defence Studies Department at King's College London (KCL), affiliated with the School of Security Studies within the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy. He retired from the NHS after 31 years of frontline ambulance service with the London Ambulance Service and South Western Ambulance Service NHS Trusts. His research focuses on military effectiveness, particularly the British Army’s operational refugee management during the Second World War, and historical comparisons to modern conflicts. He holds an MA in British Second World War Studies from the University of Birmingham (2013).
Research interests include the British Army’s colonial policing legacy, change-management in military assets, and land warfare tactics. His work examines refugee management’s impact on operational command systems and logistics during WWII, drawing parallels to modern military challenges.
His sole publication, in the Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research (2019), analyzes the mechanization of Yeomanry regiments in the Middle East during 1940–42. Hawkins is a member of the Society for Army Historical Research, the Royal Historical Society (Early Career Researcher), and the Occupation Studies Research Network.
