Nick Gurski is an Associate Professor & Associate Chair in the Department of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics at Case Western Reserve University, located in Cleveland, Ohio. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and is based at 2145 Adelbert Rd, Room 202D. His research focuses on higher categorical algebra, including monoidal structures in 2- and 3-dimensional categories, applications to stable homotopy theory and topological quantum field theory, and generalizations of traditional algebraic structures to higher categories.
His work spans topics such as module theory, bialgebra-like structures, homological algebra, and homotopy coherent structures in higher categories. Notable contributions include studies on pseudomorphisms, opetopic categories, and the symmetric monoidal 2-category framework. Gurski also explores interdisciplinary applications, such as using algebraic topology and machine learning to analyze brain network dynamics through platforms like MaTiLDA.
His publications reflect a deep engagement with foundational category theory, including coherence theorems, topological invariants, and K-theory for 2-categories. Recent work (2021–2025) highlights advancements in neural mosaics, persistent homology for epilepsy analysis, and flipped teaching methodologies. Gurski’s research bridges pure mathematics with applied fields, emphasizing the utility of higher categorical frameworks in diverse contexts.
