Nick Gebhardt is a Professor of Jazz and Popular Music Studies and Director of Research (Media) at Birmingham City University. He leads the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research, focusing on transnational jazz studies and cultural politics. His work bridges musicology, American cultural history, and media studies.
Research interests include jazz and popular music in American culture, transnational methodologies in jazz studies, and the intersection of music with identity, politics, and media. He co-founded the Routledge 'Transnational Studies in Jazz' book series (2014) and directs AHRC-funded projects like 'Jazz and Everyday Aesthetics.'
He has held roles in major international initiatives such as the HERA-funded Rhythm Changes project (2010–2013) and currently leads the CHIME project on cultural heritage in European music festivals. He serves on the editorial board of the Jazz Research Journal, editing its experimental 'Extended Play' section.
Notable publications include Going For Jazz (2008), Vaudeville Melodies (2014), and the co-edited Cultural Politics of Jazz Collectives (2020). His research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to music's role in shaping cultural narratives and identities.
