Nicholson Baker (b. 1957) is a renowned writer and Professor of Poetry and Writing at The European Graduate School / EGS. Born in New York City, he graduated from Haverford College with a BA in Philosophy. His work bridges fiction, non-fiction, and activism, focusing on minute character introspection and societal critique.
His research interests include archival preservation, inspired by his campaign against library paper destruction, leading to the establishment of the American Newspaper Repository. He has also explored political history, notably challenging WWII historiography in Human Smoke.
Award-winning author of over 20 books, Baker’s novels like Mezzanine and Vox pioneered footnoted narratives and phone-sex dialogue, respectively. His essays and articles address cultural, technological, and political themes, often blending personal observation with broader societal analysis. Recipient of the James Madison Freedom of Information Award (1997) and National Book Critics Circle Award (2001).
