Nicholas Veldhuis is an Associate Professor and ARC Future Fellow in the Drug Discovery Biology department at Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Monash University). He co-directs the Integrated Neurogenic Mechanisms Laboratory and leads the Endosomal Signalling Program in the ARC Centre of Excellence in Convergent Bio-Nano Science and Technology. He chairs the Basic Pain Research Special Interest Group of the Australian Pain Society.
His research focuses on three key areas: (1) Location-specific control of G Protein-Coupled Receptors (GPCRs) in pain/inflammation signaling, (2) Cellular mechanisms driving pain in Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), and (3) Role of mechano-sensing ion channels (TRPV4/Piezo-1) in pain and inflammation. He develops novel drug delivery systems targeting endosomal receptors for chronic pain management.
Key projects include developing pH-responsive nanoparticles for pain relief, studying DEB mouse models, and investigating cannabinoid analgesics for EB. He has 54+ publications in top journals like Nature Nanotechnology and PNAS, focusing on endosomal signaling pathways, nanomedicine applications, and pain mechanisms.
He holds the ARC Future Fellowship and leads 10+ research projects. His work addresses UN SDGs related to health and well-being, advancing treatments for gastrointestinal disorders (Hirschsprung Disease, IBS) and improving pain management alternatives to opioids.
Expertise includes cell signaling, molecular pharmacology, live cell imaging, protein engineering, and clinical collaborations. His lab combines bio-nano science with pharmacology to translate discoveries into therapeutic solutions.
