Nicholas Valentino

Nicholas Valentino is a Professor of Political Science and Research Professor at the Center for Political Studies, University of Michigan. He serves as Principal Investigator (PI) for the American National Election Studies (ANES) and held leadership roles including President of the International Society for Political Psychology (2019-2020) and Associate PI of ANES since 2018.

His research employs experimental methods, surveys, and content analyses to explore political psychological dimensions of public opinion, racial attitudes, emotional responses (anger vs. fear), and group empathy in multicultural contexts. Recent work examines evolving racial rhetoric globally and its interplay with globalization-related anxieties.

Valentino has authored influential books like Seeing Us in Them: Social Divisions and the Politics of Group Empathy (Cambridge, 2021) and Beyond Rationality: Behavioral Political Science in the 21st Century (Cambridge, 2021), earning multiple awards including the APSA Best Book and David Sears Prize.
