Professor Nicholas Tsagourias is a Professor of International Law at the University of Sheffield's School of Law. He holds a visiting post at the University of Umea, Sweden. His academic journey includes degrees from the University of Thessaloniki (LLB), University of Bristol (LLM), and University of Nottingham (PhD). He previously served as Professor of International Law and Security at the University of Glasgow.
His research focuses on international law and the use of force, international humanitarian law, cybersecurity, and collective security. He directs the Sheffield Centre for International and European Law and sits on editorial boards for key journals like the Journal of Conflict and Security Law and Journal on the Use of Force and International Law. He is a member of the European Society of International Law's Interest Group on Peace and Security and the AHRC Peer Review College.
Recent publications include works on cyberwarfare, cybersecurity governance, and the regulation of cyber weapons. His articles address topics like cyber peacekeeping, attribution challenges, and legal frameworks for cyber incidents. He frequently contributes to debates on international law's evolution in digital contexts, emphasizing state sovereignty, non-intervention principles, and humanitarian norms.
Teaching includes modules on international criminal law, humanitarian law, and international security institutions. He advocates for enquiry-based teaching to foster intellectual independence among students. Professional activities include invited lectures at UNESCO, the Defence Academy of the UK, and the European Society of International Law.
