Nicholas Stephen Manton is a Professor of Mathematical Physics at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society (1996) and St John's College (1997-present), with roles including Head of the High Energy Physics group (2002-17) and Adams Prize adjudicator (2000-02, 2004-14).
Manton's research focuses on topological solitons in field theory, such as vortices, monopoles, instantons, and Skyrmions. He developed the geodesic approximation for soliton dynamics and revived Skyrme's model of nuclei as quantized Skyrmions, explaining nuclear spins and energies for Carbon-12 and Oxygen-16. His work bridges quantum field theory and computational physics, with collaborations spanning Edinburgh, Durham, and Leeds.
Recent publications analyze soliton interactions, baryon number violation via sphalerons, and geometric models of matter. He coauthored the monograph Topological Solitons (2004) and The Physical World (2017).
