Nicholas Sougiannis

Nicholas Sougiannis serves as an Assistant Professor of Finance at the United States Naval Academy's Economics Department since 2023. His unique background combines academic finance expertise with extensive military experience as an F/A-18 Super Hornet Instructor & Weapon Systems Operator.

His research interests focus on Equity Valuation & Analysis, Portfolio Theory, Financial Literacy, and Government Finance. Sougiannis has developed two introductory finance courses at the academy that have achieved remarkable student outcomes, with 93.8% demonstrating basic financial literacy and 70.1% demonstrating sophisticated financial literacy on final examinations. His teaching philosophy emphasizes 'The most agreeable volume of financial knowledge expected of Naval Leaders'.

Analysis of his publications reveals a strong focus on practical applications of finance in military contexts, particularly regarding retirement systems and financial literacy for service members. His work demonstrates how portfolio theory can significantly improve military retirement outcomes while reducing risk.

Sougiannis serves as a thesis advisor to junior officers completing their Master in Leadership Education and Development (LEAD). He leads the Finance & Investment Club, teaches the 'Finance for Naval Leaders' seminar to first-year students, and serves as operations officer for the summer training powered-flight-program. His research has secured academic recognition through publications in the prestigious Naval Institute Proceedings.

He has developed and led an international program to Greece & Cyprus, leveraging his Greek heritage (raised in Kythira, Greece) to enhance the academy's global perspective on finance.
