Ryan specializes in technical theater production with research interests spanning theatrical design, stage technology, and performance venue management. His practical expertise encompasses scenic rigging systems, stagecraft innovation, and production workflow optimization, developed through hands-on roles at major theater institutions including PlayMakers Repertory Company and Utah Shakespeare Festival.
As vice-chair of design, tech, and management for the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival—Region IV, he actively shapes theater education standards nationally. His pedagogical approach integrates real-world technical direction experience with classroom instruction, having taught at Tennessee Tech University, Middle Tennessee State University, Spelman College, and Agnes Scott College to develop students' comprehensive production capabilities.
Ryan's operational leadership at Mercer Theatre involves managing the Tattnall Square Center for the Arts technical infrastructure while mentoring students in live production environments.
