Nicholas Ritter serves as an Adjunct Professor of Bassoon at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and holds performing roles as section bassoonist/contrabassoonist in the Charlotte Symphony since 2022-2023 and contrabassoonist in the Richmond Symphony since 2022. His professional affiliations include former positions with Orchestra Iowa and freelance work with major orchestras like the Chicago Symphony, National Symphony, and Lyric Opera. During summers, he participates in music festivals such as the Santa Fe Opera and Peninsula Music Festival.
His educational background includes degrees in Bassoon Performance and Music Theory from Northwestern University and DePaul University, studying under notable instructors including Chris Millard, Lewis Kirk, and David McGill. Teaching roles have extended to Northwestern University, Northern Illinois University, Cornelius Youth Orchestras, and The People’s School of Music in Chicago, complemented by a private bassoon and reed-making studio.
Ritter’s professional interests focus on bassoon pedagogy, orchestral performance practices, and music education innovation. His performances emphasize woodwind ensemble dynamics and contemporary orchestral repertoire interpretation.
