Nicholas Pinter is a Professor and Associate Director of the UC Davis Center for Watershed Sciences, specializing in geomorphology and flood risk management. He holds the Roy J. Shlemon Chair in Applied Geosciences and is a Geological Society of America Fellow. His research integrates fluvial processes with public policy to address natural hazards and climate adaptation.
Education: Ph.D., UC Santa Barbara (1992). Research focuses on rivers, flood dynamics, managed retreat strategies, and interdisciplinary science communication. He leads projects on floodplain management, groundwater policy, and geospatial modeling for disaster resilience.
Key research areas include flood risk quantification, transboundary water management, and historical patterns of community relocation due to flooding. Recent work examines policy frameworks in California, the Rhine River Basin, and Baja California Sur.
Publications emphasize flood-loss modeling, levee systems, and the socio-environmental impacts of climate change. He advises FEMA’s Community Rating System and collaborates on graduate training programs combining field geology with media communication.
Current projects include geologic mapping of Isla Monserrate and evaluating flood vulnerability using NFIP insurance data. His work bridges academic research with actionable solutions for policymakers and communities facing environmental threats.
