Nicholas Pickwoad is a Senior Research Fellow at Camberwell College of Arts, part of the University of the Arts, London. He holds a doctorate in English Literature from Oxford University and has extensive experience in bookbinding, conservation, and historical research. Currently, he leads the St Catherine’s Monastery Library Project and directs the Ligatus Research Centre, dedicated to bookbinding history. His professional roles include advising the National Trust since 1978 and editorial work for The Paper Conservator.
His research focuses on European bookbinding practices during the hand printing press era, combining practical conservation expertise with historical analysis. He has taught at Columbia University and Harvard University, and continues to lecture globally on bookbinding history. Notable achievements include delivering the 2008 Panizzi Lectures at the British Library and receiving the Plowden Medal for Conservation.
Dr. Pickwoad’s work bridges academic research and practical conservation, emphasizing the cultural significance of book structures. His projects and publications explore material culture, preservation techniques, and the evolution of bookbinding across centuries.
