Nicholas P. Ambulos, Jr.

Nicholas P. Ambulos, Jr. is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), with secondary appointments in Medicine and Administration. He serves as Associate Director for Shared Services at the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center (UMGCC), founding Director of the Center for Innovative Biomedical Resources (CIBR), and Director of the Genomics Core Facility, overseeing institutional core research infrastructure.

Dr. Ambulos earned his PhD in Biology/Molecular Microbiology from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), followed by a five-year postdoctoral fellowship there. He joined UMSOM in 1992, becoming director of the Biopolymer Core Facility in 1993 and evolving it into a comprehensive genomics operation.

His research spans Genomics, Molecular Genetics, and Pharmacogenomics, emphasizing clinical assay development and core facility innovation. He established the CAP-accredited Translational Genomics Laboratory (TGL) in 2011, creating pathways for genomic discoveries to transition from basic research to clinical diagnostics and routine patient care.

Analysis of his publications reveals dominant themes in HPV genotyping using next-generation sequencing for cancer diagnostics and systematic implementation of pharmacogenomics in clinical workflows. His work consistently bridges molecular biology with translational applications, particularly in oncology and personalized medicine.

Dr. Ambulos has secured substantial funding including a $7.3 million NIH G20 grant for 28,000 square feet of laboratory renovation and a $1.6 million NIH S10 grant for biobank infrastructure. These resources underpin the University of Maryland Medicine Biorepository and support high-impact translational research across the institution.

As CIBR director, he manages a network of shared research facilities including the Genomics Core and Translational Genomics Laboratory. His leadership facilitates collaboration between core directors, researchers, and institutional leadership while enabling new grant opportunities through centralized resource management.
