Nicholas Nisbett is Professorial Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and Professor of Global Public Policy, Nutrition and Health Equity at the University of Sussex. With over 20 years of international development experience, he focuses on food and nutrition policy, equity, and political economy across South Asia, West Africa, and global policy arenas.
His research spans:
- Nutrition equity and political economy of agri-food systems
- Social protection mechanisms for poverty reduction
- Urban food environments and off-grid infrastructure
- Sustainable healthy diets through fruits/vegetables
- Trade policy alignment with development goals
Recent publications (2023-2025) reveal consistent emphasis on systemic inequalities in food systems, with growing attention to urban contexts, governance mechanisms, and policy coherence. His work bridges academic research and actionable policy through UN initiatives like the Global Nutrition Report and Food Systems Summit+4.
Nisbett leads major international projects including the World Food Programme Knowledge Partnership, FRESH (Fruits and Vegetables for Sustainable Healthy Diets), and LOGIC (Living Off-Grid Food and Infrastructure Collaboration), targeting nutrition security for marginalized urban populations across five cities in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
As co-editor of the IDS Bulletin on food political economy and contributor to the UN Committee on Food Security’s High Level Panel of Experts, he drives interdisciplinary collaboration connecting nutrition science, public policy, urban studies, and political economy to transform inequitable food systems.
