Professor Nicholas Mundy is affiliated with the Department of Zoology at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on the evolutionary genetics of animal coloration, particularly plumage coloration in birds and co-evolution with colour vision in vertebrates.
- Current research themes include the genetics of carotenoid coloration, a neglected area where his team discovered a locus converting dietary yellow carotenoids to red pigments for avian displays.
- Longstanding studies on melanin-based coloration extend to plumage patterning, molecular mechanisms of melanism, and population genetics.
- Developed quantitative methods linking gene evolution to phenotypic changes in primates, with plans to scale to genomic analyses.
