Nicholas Mays

Professor Nicholas Mays is the Professor of Health Policy at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), affiliated with the Department of Health Services Research and Policy under the Faculty of Public Health and Policy. He joined LSHTM in 2003 after roles in the NHS, academia, and policy advisory roles in New Zealand. Mays leads the Policy Innovation and Evaluation Research Unit (PIRU), a collaboration with the London School of Economics and Imperial College, focusing on policy evaluation and innovation in health and social care. His research spans health policy analysis, health systems, and evaluation methodologies.

Key areas of focus include the evaluation of national policies like the UK Antimicrobial Resistance Action Plan and the Organ Donation (Deemed Consent) Act 2019. He also explores primary healthcare structures, such as Primary Care Networks in England. Mays has authored textbooks on health policy processes and qualitative research methods, contributing to both academic and practical policy development.

His work integrates policy analysis with implementation science, emphasizing rigorous evaluation of policy pilots and their societal impact. Grants include funding from the NIHR and the Department of Health and Social Care, supporting evaluations of integrated care programs and social care reforms.
