Professor Nicholas Lockyer is a Professor of Physical Chemistry at The University of Manchester, based in the Department of Chemistry. He holds affiliations with the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology and the Photon Science Institute. His expertise spans surface analysis, chemical imaging, and mass spectrometry instrumentation development.
Education: BSc (1st Class) in Chemistry (1991) and PhD in Laser Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (1996), both from UMIST Chemistry. Postdoctoral research under Prof. John Vickerman focused on ToF-SIMS instrument development. Joined the University of Manchester in 2004, transferring to the School of Chemistry in 2011.
Research interests include ToF-SIMS, laser-based mass spectrometry, and their applications in life sciences. Key themes: fundamental studies, instrument innovation, and collaborative healthcare/industry projects. Current group focuses on advancing surface analysis techniques and chemical imaging.
Awards: Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). Active in research projects like the Leverhulme Fellowship and EU-funded initiatives. Leads equipment facilities including Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry and DESI-MS instruments.
