Alex Henderson is an Honorary Lecturer in Analytical Science and Cheminformatics at the University of Manchester. He holds a PhD in Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Small Metallic Particles (UMIST, 1996) and additional certifications in Mathematics (Open University, 2010) and Semantic Web Technologies (OpenHPI, 2013). His roles include Director of SurfaceSpectra Ltd and the International Society for Clinical Spectroscopy, and he served as an Academic Visitor at Imperial College London (2017).
Education:
- Doctor of Philosophy (1996), Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Small Metallic Particles, UMIST
- Bachelor of Science (1988), Chemistry, UMIST
- Certificates in Mathematics (2010) and Semantic Web Technologies (2013)
Research Interests: Focus on data reduction techniques applied to ToF-SIMS and IR spectroscopy for cell chemistry analysis. He develops chemometric and cheminformatic tools for interpreting spectra, chemical images, and hypercubes in cellular metabolism and drug interactions. His work also involves creating visualization tools for chemists and biologists.
Key Contributions: Co-led projects like FAIRSpectra to advance FAIR data principles in spectroscopy. Active in the RAI Centre for Robotics and Artificial Intelligence as part of the technical team. Published extensively on spectroscopic imaging, machine learning in pathology, and cancer diagnostics.
Labs/Teams: Involved with the Surface Analysis Research Centre, SurfaceSpectra Ltd, and the Gardner Lab. Collaborates on initiatives like CLIRSPEC and FAIRSpectra to improve data interoperability in chemical analysis.
