Professor Nicholas Evans is a faculty member at the University of Southampton, specializing in theoretical physics with a focus on strongly coupled gauge theories and holographic methods. He leads the Southampton High Energy Physics (SHEP) Group and is part of the Southampton Theory Astrophysics and Gravity (STAG) Research Centre. His research explores QCD dynamics, composite Higgs models, and the application of string theory to understand phenomena like neutron star structure and quark matter phases.
Evans holds a PhD from the University of Southampton (1993) and conducted postdoctoral research at Yale and Boston Universities before returning to Southampton in 1999. He currently teaches first-year courses on thermodynamics and has previously instructed advanced physics courses including Quantum Field Theory.
His active research projects include investigating the ‘periodic table’ of gauge theories, neutron star cores, and domain wall chiral fermions. He collaborates on grants funded by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), such as the ‘New Frontiers in Particle Physics, Cosmology and Gravity’ initiative. Evans supervises multiple PhD students in theoretical physics and related interdisciplinary areas.
