University of California , Santa Barbara (UCSB)معرفی
Nicholas Bloom is the William Eberle Professor of Economics at Stanford University, a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR), and Co-Director of the Productivity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship program at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). His research centers on management practices and uncertainty, with significant contributions to understanding remote work, productivity, and innovation.
His educational background includes a BA from the University of Cambridge, an MPhil from the University of Oxford, and a PhD from University College London. Prior professional experience includes roles at the UK Treasury and McKinsey & Company.
Bloom's research spans management practices, economic uncertainty, productivity measurement, and remote work dynamics. He pioneered large-scale international studies on management quality, demonstrating its causal impact on firm performance. His remote work research gained global prominence during the pandemic, examining effects on productivity, disability inclusion, and geographic labor mobility. Current work extends into climate investment and inflation heterogeneity.
Recent publications reveal three dominant trajectories: (1) Remote work's transformation of labor markets and firm organization, (2) Management practices as drivers of productivity growth, and (3) Macroeconomic phenomena like inflation and climate investment through microeconomic lenses. His empirical approach combines large-scale surveys with natural experiments.
His scientific awards include:
- Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
- Alfred Sloan Fellowship
- Bernacer Prize for best European economist under 40
- European Investment Bank Prize
- Frisch Medal for empirical economics
- Kauffman Medal for entrepreneurship research
- National Science Foundation Career Award
Bloom directs major research initiatives including the NBER program and CEPR's management practices project. His work attracts substantial funding from NSF and private foundations, supporting global firm surveys across 20+ countries. He actively collaborates with central banks and international organizations on policy applications, particularly regarding productivity measurement and remote work regulation.
He leads the Stanford Productivity Lab, coordinating international teams conducting field experiments on management practices. Current projects include tracking post-pandemic work arrangements through the WFH Research initiative and analyzing climate investment using novel firm-level datasets.
