Nicholas B. Tiller is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Respiratory Medicine and Exercise Physiology, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He holds a PhD in Human Applied Physiology from Brunel University London and has extensive qualifications including Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing certification and a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education from Sheffield Hallam University.
His research focuses on exercise physiology with specialization in extreme exercise environments, particularly ultra-marathon running. Key interests include respiratory function during endurance events, sex differences in performance, and the physiological impacts of ultra-endurance activities. His work bridges clinical respiratory medicine with sports science, examining conditions like COPD through exercise stress testing.
Recent publications reveal a dual focus: cutting-edge research on ultra-marathon physiology (muscle damage mechanisms, altitude effects, sex differences) and critical analysis of sports science methodology. His 2024 work highlights growing concerns about research integrity in kinesiology and the need for improved science communication to combat health misinformation.
- Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (2023)
- Book Authority's "Best Sports Science Books of All Time" for The Skeptic's Guide to Sports Science (2020)
Tiller actively contributes to science communication as a columnist for Skeptical Inquirer and Ultra-Running Magazine, while serving as Associate Editor for the International Journal of Sports Nutrition. His personal experience as an ultra-marathon runner informs his research on extreme exercise physiology. Current projects examine cardiopulmonary responses to multi-day endurance events and respiratory adaptations at altitude.
