Nicholas B. Miller is an Associate Professor of History and Coordinator of the History Program at Flagler College, part of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences in the Humanities Department. His research focuses on global history with regional specializations in Britain, Germany, Portugal, Hawai‘i, and Malaya during the 18th and 19th centuries. He explores themes at the intersection of cultural, intellectual, and social history, including cross-cultural encounters during the Enlightenment, migration discourses, and colonialism.
Education:
- Ph.D. (European Intellectual History and Global History), University of Potsdam (summa cum laude)
- M.St. (Early Modern History), University of Oxford (with distinction)
- B.A. (History), University of Durham (first-class honors)
Research Interests: European intellectual history, global colonialism, plantation systems, migration studies, and the Age of Revolutions. His work includes comparative studies of bonded labor and the history of education.
He received a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (2021–2023) to research Wilhelm Hillebrand’s global networks as a German medic and immigration commissioner in Hawai‘i. Dr. Miller teaches courses on modern world history, the Enlightenment, and colonialism. In Fall 2025, he will be on exchange at the University of Würzburg.

Publications: Three authored/edited books, including a forthcoming study on plantation knowledge systems. His work bridges transnational intellectual networks and material histories of colonial exploitation.
