Nicholas A. Christakis

Nicholas A. Christakis is the Sterling Professor of Social and Natural Science at Yale University, with appointments in the Department of Sociology, Statistics and Data Science, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Medicine, and the School of Management. He directs the Human Nature Lab and is Co-Director of the Yale Institute for Network Science, where he leads pioneering research on social networks, human behavior, and health.

His research spans three major domains: social contagion of health behaviors and emotions, the genetic and evolutionary foundations of social network structure, and the use of artificial intelligence agents to influence hybrid human-machine systems. His work combines statistical modeling, large-scale experiments, and field studies in diverse populations, including in Honduras and India.

The recent articles highlight consistent themes in network science, emotional and behavioral contagion, public health interventions, and the structural power of social networks. His research demonstrates that happiness, obesity, smoking, and altruism can spread through social ties, and that these processes are amenable to modeling and intervention.

Dr. Christakis has advised numerous public health initiatives and led large-scale grants focused on network-based interventions. He has authored over 220 scientific articles and influential books such as Connected and Blueprint, which have shaped discourse on human interconnectedness and societal evolution.

He is actively engaged in science communication and policy, recently joining the Science Advisory Board of the Complexity Science Hub (CSH) in Vienna. His work continues to explore how human biology and social networks co-evolve, with implications for improving public health and social resilience.
