معرفی
Prof. Niamh Nowlan is a Full Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University College Dublin (UCD), School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. She leads the Developmental Biomechanics Group and co-chairs the UCD Centre for Children's Orthopaedic Research & Innovation. Her research focuses on fetal movement's role in skeletal development, with emphasis on pediatric orthopaedics and mechanobiology. She previously held roles at Imperial College London, including Reader in Developmental Biomechanics, and has a strong academic background in Trinity College Dublin (BEng, PhD).
Education:
- Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Engineering), Trinity College Dublin
- PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Trinity College Dublin
- PGDip in Statistics, Trinity College Dublin
- PG Cert in University Learning & Teaching, Imperial College London
Research Interests: Prof. Nowlan investigates how mechanical forces from fetal movements influence joint and bone development. Her work addresses conditions like developmental dysplasia of the hip and arthrogryposis. She develops wearable fetal movement monitors and studies the biomechanics of skeletal formation using animal models (zebrafish, mice, chicks).
Publications & Awards: Over 50 peer-reviewed articles, including high-impact studies in Science Advances, PLOS Computational Biology, and Bone. Notable awards include the 2018 S.M. Perren Award (European Society of Biomechanics) and €8.5M in research grants (ERC, Royal Society).
Grants & Funding:
- ERC Consolidator Grant (2023–present)
- ERC Starting Grant (2014–2019)
- Royal Society International Exchange Grant (2018–2020)
Labs & Teams: Directs the UCD Developmental Biomechanics Lab and collaborates with the Conway Institute. Her work spans biomechanics, tissue engineering, and clinical translation of fetal monitoring devices.
