Niamh McNamara is an Associate Professor in Social Psychology at the School of Social Sciences, Nottingham Trent University. She leads the Groups, Identities, & Health Research Group and serves as the Early Career Researcher mentoring lead. Her research bridges social and health psychology, focusing on how group memberships and social identities influence health outcomes, particularly in marginalized communities and mental health contexts.
Her work spans community and virtual group resilience, identity changes during life transitions (e.g., eating disorder recovery, retirement), and the impact of stigma on mental healthcare experiences. She has secured significant grants from the Australian Research Council, Fire Fighters Charity, and British Psychological Society for projects on loneliness, retirement transitions, and social prescribing.
