Niall McLaughlin

Niall McLaughlin serves as a full-time Senior Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing at Canterbury Christ Church University's School of Nursing, Midwifery, Allied and Public Health since 2007. He holds dual leadership roles as Pathway Director for the BSc Mental Health Nursing programme and Professional Lead for Mental Health Nursing, while also functioning as an NMC registrant reviewer.

His research and teaching expertise centers on mental health recovery frameworks, informed by 30+ years of frontline clinical experience spanning inpatient and community settings across East Kent, York, and Australia. Current scholarly work focuses on service user contributions to developing empathic nursing practitioners through his ongoing PhD research.

McLaughlin delivers mental health recovery curriculum at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels while cross-training other health and social care pathways. His academic output includes co-authored book chapters exploring practitioner empathy development through lived experience integration in nursing education.
