Niall MacQuaide

Niall MacQuaide is a Reader in Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University, where he conducts research on cardiac physiology and electrophysiology. He is actively involved in multiple research projects related to heart function and disease, and is currently accepting PhD students.

His research focuses on cardiac muscle cell biochemistry, calcium signaling in cardiomyocytes, and the molecular mechanisms underlying heart function and disease. Key areas of interest include:

Dr. MacQuaide holds significant research funding and leads multiple projects:

• Preclinical heart failure therapeutic peptide testing in human iPSC cardiomyocytes (2025-2026)
• Cell-to-cell variability of cardiac electrophysiology and its influence on ventricular repolarisation
• Preclinical testing of a novel heart failure therapeutic peptide in whole hearts and human tissue
• Targeting PDE3/4 to allow regulation of cardiac calcium homeostasis in disease (British Heart Foundation, 2021-2023)

He is an active collaborator with researchers including Martin P., Baillie G., Smith G.L., and Dries E., and contributes to the GCU-Cell Signalling and Bioimaging Unit which provides infrastructure for advanced cell imaging and signaling research.
