Professor Niall Hayes is Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Business at the University of Leeds, holding a Professorship in Technology and Organisation. Previously, he served as Executive Dean at Nottingham Trent University and spent 23 years at Lancaster University in various leadership roles including Professor of Information and Organisation. His expertise spans the social study of information systems, digital innovation, digital inclusion, international development, and participatory design.
Dr. Hayes holds a PhD and MSc from Lancaster University and a BSc from Edge Hill University. He has led major projects such as the €2.98m EU Horizon 2020 Mobile-Age initiative and secured funding for research on digital poverty in rural areas. His work addresses technology's societal impact, including telecare systems for elderly independence, digital equity in developing regions, and pandemic-era technology adoption.
His research outputs include over 50 peer-reviewed articles in journals like Human Relations and Organization Studies, with a focus on technology's role in social contexts. He has advised governments and international bodies, including presentations at the European Parliament, and contributed to Gold-rated Teaching Excellence Framework submissions at Lancaster and NTU. Hayes also serves as an External Examiner at the London School of Economics.
Key achievements include his PFHEA fellowship, leadership in institution-wide strategic initiatives, and impactful work on digital poverty, eldercare technology, and global development. His interdisciplinary approach bridges management, computing, and social sciences to address contemporary challenges in technology and society.
