Nhial Tutlam

Nhial Tutlam is an Assistant Professor at the Brown School and Associate Director for Research at the International Center for Child Health and Development (ICHAD) at Washington University in St. Louis. His work focuses on the intersection of war trauma, mental health, and health outcomes like suicide, substance use, and HIV among conflict-affected youth in refugee settlements and resettlement settings. He is currently leading an NIH-funded study in Uganda to understand HIV treatment adherence and developing culturally congruent interventions for refugee communities.

Tutlam’s research explores the intergenerational transmission of trauma, combining family-strengthening programs and peer mentorship initiatives like TeenAge Health Consultants (TAHC) to address mental health and HIV risk. His work emphasizes community-based intervention development, mixed methods, and implementation science.

He has secured grants, including a $1.7 million multidisciplinary intervention grant (Project RESTORE) and NIH funding for resettled refugee youth in Nebraska. His interventions aim to address trauma-associated disorders and promote resilience through family and peer support systems.
