Neville Fowkes

Neville Fowkes is an Honorary Research Fellow at the School of Physics, Maths and Computing (Computer Science and Software Engineering Department) at The University of Western Australia. He holds a BSc and PhD from Queensland University of Technology. His research focuses on applying mathematical modelling to industrial and scientific continuum mechanics problems, with over 30 participations in international Maths in Industry Study Groups (MISGs) across countries like Indonesia, Laos, Portugal, and South Africa.

Research interests include crack propagation, mining tunnel collapse, concrete behavior models, ship mooring systems, groundwater flow, microwave propagation, enzyme kinetics, cancer research, and boundary tracing techniques. He has authored a widely-used textbook on industrial mathematical modelling.

Notable collaborations include projects with BHP, DuPont, and Unilever, supported by grants from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Portugal), ARC, and others. He contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through industrial problem-solving initiatives.

He has advised on 2 grants including 'Modelling Temperature Variations in Stationary Vehicles with Forensic Applications' (2004-2005) and 'Improved Elastomer Model for Resources Industry' (2010-2011). His consultancy includes work on laser tracker calibration and mine safety barrier design.

Fowkes has established industrial mathematics programs in Laos, Portugal, Indonesia, and Thailand, and runs graduate workshops globally. He actively participates in international education initiatives, including the AIMS Postgraduate Program in Africa.
