Gary Froyland

Gary Froyland is a Scientia Professor and Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow at the School of Mathematics and Statistics, UNSW Sydney (2024–2029). His career spans over 25 years, including roles as Professor (2014–2024), Associate Professor (2009–2013), and Senior Lecturer (2004–2008) at UNSW, as well as industry and academic positions at BHP Billiton, University of Western Australia, and institutions in Germany and Japan.

Research Interests include ergodic theory, dynamical systems, integer programming, and applications of data science to industrial and environmental challenges. His work bridges theoretical mathematics and practical optimization problems, particularly in mining and planetary science.

He has secured over $10M in competitive grants, including a $3.63M ARC Laureate Fellowship (2024–2029), and leads UNSW’s Fundamental Data Science initiative. Supervision includes 15 graduated PhD students (12 primary, 3 joint) and 11 postdoctoral fellows, with ongoing mentorship of 3 PhD students and 3 postdocs.
