Nerelie Freeman is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Educational Psychology & Counselling at Monash University. She is a registered psychologist with extensive experience in educational and developmental psychology, having previously worked in Catholic, independent, and government schools in Melbourne. She also held research roles at the Drug and Alcohol Office (WA), Department of Health (WA), Melbourne Health, and the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne. Prior to Monash, she was a lecturer at the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education.
Her research interests include:
- Identification and assessment of neurodevelopmental conditions
- Identifying and assessing autistic females
- Developmental psychopathology in children
- Supporting neurodiverse students in school settings
- Enhancing child and adolescent health and wellbeing
Her recent publications focus on systematic and scoping reviews related to autism in females, classroom behavior management technologies, neurodiversity awareness, and teacher professional development. These works reflect a strong emphasis on translational research, aiming to bridge the gap between academic findings and practical application in educational settings.
She has been involved in several research projects, including evaluations of the Satellite Foundation’s programs and initiatives to support teachers working with students with disabilities. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to quality education and good health and wellbeing.
Nerelie Freeman actively contributes to the academic community through:
- Editorial responsibilities as Associate Editor for Acta Psychologica
- Peer review for journals such as Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Mental Health
- Presentations at international conferences including the International Society for Autism Research and the British Psychological Society
She mentors research students and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams on grants and publications. Her community engagement includes volunteer roles with Lifeline Melbourne and Lifeline Perth, underscoring her commitment to mental health support beyond academia.
