Nemoy Lewis

Nemoy Lewis is an Assistant Professor in the School of Urban and Regional Planning at Toronto Metropolitan University. He holds a PhD in Human Geography from Queen’s University, and undergraduate and master’s degrees in Geography from the University of Toronto. His research focuses on the financialization of housing, anti-Blackness in urban contexts, and the political economy of housing policy, particularly as they intersect with race and inequality.

Key research projects include Buying While Black: Barriers to Black Home Ownership (collaborating with the Black Planning Project) and Housing Insecurity for Black Renters: COVID-19 and the Fight to Remain Housed. These projects examine systemic barriers faced by Black Canadians in accessing stable housing, including the role of private equity and financialized landlords in displacing marginalized communities.

Teaching responsibilities include courses such as PL 8304: Housing, PLG 731: Field Trip Course, and PLG 200: Planning Principles, emphasizing qualitative research methods and urban policy analysis.

His publications explore topics like anti-Blackness in urban governance (e.g., Ferguson, Missouri), the impacts of foreclosures on Black youth, and critiques of real estate finance. Recent work includes a commentary on urban racial capitalism and a review of Race for Profit, analyzing systemic racism in U.S. housing markets.
