Nelson Martins

Nelson Martins is an Assistant Professor at the Católica Medical School and a staff scientist at the Católica Biomedical Research Centre (CBR) since 2022. He holds a PhD in Biology (2008) and a Habilitation to Direct Research (2020), both from the University of Coimbra and Université de Strasbourg respectively.

His research focuses on invertebrate models of innate immunity, specifically the genetics and evolution of Drosophila antiviral immunity and Wolbachia-mediated antiviral protection. Using Drosophila melanogaster and Daphnia longispina as model organisms, he investigates environmental impacts on genetic diversity and antiviral defense mechanisms.

Recent publications highlight trends in antiviral immunity evolution, STING-dependent pathways, and Wolbachia host interactions. His work connects to UN Sustainable Development Goals through academic qualification contributions in life sciences.
