Dr. Nelly Bencomo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Durham University, with affiliations including the Institute of Advanced Study. She holds a PhD from Lancaster University and has held roles at Aston University and INRIA Paris. Her research focuses on software engineering for autonomous systems, AI integration, decision-making under uncertainty, and runtime models. Key projects include the EPSRC-funded Twenty20Insight and JusTN0W (Net Zero Transitions), as well as the Leverhulme Centre for Algorithmic Life. She has received awards such as the Leverhulme Fellowship and Best Paper Awards at EDTconf and SEAMS. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, including digital twins, Bayesian methods, and human-AI collaboration. Supervised PhD students include Dr. Huma Samin and Dr. Juan Parra. Current grants total over £5 million, with a focus on climate justice, AI ethics, and healthcare decision tools like weDecide.
Research interests span AI/ML, self-adaptive systems, and uncertainty management. Recent publications explore digital twin lifecycle management, code traceability for LLMs, and uncertainty propagation in adaptive systems. She actively participates in conferences as a keynote speaker and program committee member (e.g., MODELS, SEAMS). Awards highlight contributions to software engineering and societal impact, including recognition in health innovation and sustainability.
