Nele Van Den Noortgate

Nele Van Den Noortgate serves as Senior Lecturer in Geriatric Medicine at Ghent University and Head of the Geriatrics Department at Ghent University Hospital, with dual expertise as a trained physician in Palliative Care Medicine. She holds prominent leadership roles including secretary of the EUGMS Palliative Care Interest Group, president of the Flanders Federation for Palliative Care's working group on palliative care in geriatrics, and member of the EAPC-EUGMS-Maruzza foundation task force.

Her academic background includes an MD and PhD, with doctoral research examining outcomes in older patients with acute renal failure and prognostic indices. Current research focuses on building a multidisciplinary team investigating end-of-life care for hospitalized elderly populations, specifically analyzing non-treatment decisions, advance care planning implementation, and moral distress among healthcare professionals.

As an executive board member of the European Academy for Medicine of Ageing, she develops and delivers educational programs on palliative care principles for European geriatricians. Her clinical-academic work bridges hospital practice with international policy development through organizations like the EUGMS and European Association for Palliative Care.
