Neil Maher is a Professor of History in the Federated History Department at NJIT, specializing in U.S. environmental and political history. His research bridges environmental justice, space history, and the New Deal era. He earned his Ph.D. in History from NYU in 2001 and has authored seminal works like Nature’s New Deal (Oxford, 2007) and Apollo in the Age of Aquarius (Harvard, 2017), which won multiple awards. Maher has served as a historical consultant for PBS and the History Channel, and co-writes a textbook on visual images in historical research.
His education includes a B.A. from Dartmouth College (1986), M.A. (1997), and Ph.D. (2001) in U.S. History from NYU. Maher’s teaching spans environmental justice, climate change, and postwar American history. He actively engages with public audiences through op-eds in New York Times and Washington Post, emphasizing the intersection of environmental policy and social movements.
His awards include the Eugene M. Emme Best Book Award and Bloomberg View Must-Read recognition. Maher’s research often explores the societal and ecological impacts of major historical projects like the Civilian Conservation Corps and NASA’s Apollo program. His recent work examines transnational environmental history and the legacy of 20th-century environmental policies.
