Neil Fleming

Professor Neil Fleming is a faculty member in the Department of History, Politics, and Sociology at the University of Worcester, part of the Institute of Arts and Humanities. He joined the university in January 2011 and previously held lectureships at Cardiff University, Queen's University Belfast, and Glasgow Caledonian University. He was also the 16th Fulbright-Robertson Visiting Professor of British History at Westminster College, Missouri. His research focuses on British, Irish, and imperial history since the late nineteenth century, with particular emphasis on colonial studies and modern historical methodologies.

His professional accolades include multiple research grants and fellowships, such as the 2024 Research Grant from the Historical Society of the Episcopal Church and the 2024 Mary Louise Nickerson Travel Grant. Earlier recognitions include the Scouloudi Research Award (2013) and Caird Research Fellowship (2013).

Fleming has advised seven research students, including current PhD candidates Naseer Habib and Maddie Hale, alongside former advisees who have attained doctoral degrees. He has also engaged in teaching and research collaborations with international institutions, including McGill University (Canada), Università Roma Tre (Italy), and Karlstad Universitet (Sweden), through programs like Erasmus and the Osler Library initiative. His academic mobility further includes visits to Åbo Akademi (Finland), Avignon Université (France), and Technische Universität Dortmund (Germany).

While affiliated with the Centre for Academic English and Skills at the University of Worcester, his primary academic contributions are rooted in historical studies. He has held visiting roles at Oxford’s St Catherine’s and St Antony’s Colleges, reflecting his interdisciplinary engagement within the academic community.
