معرفی
Neil Brown is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Engineering and Sustainable Development, De Montfort University (DMU), affiliated with the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD). His work spans energy efficiency, renewable energy, appropriate technology, and data processing, with a strong emphasis on practical applications in buildings and industry.
His educational background includes a PhD in Modeling and Simulation of Machining Processes and Electrohydraulic Servomechanisms from Loughborough University (1995–1998), an MSc in Modern Methods for Electromechanical Design from the University of Leicester (1994–1995), and a BEng (Hons) in Engineering Technology (Mechanical Design) from Leicester Polytechnic (1988–1991).
His research interests focus on energy efficiency, renewable energy systems, electromechanical design, instrumentation, and data analysis for sustainable energy systems. He has led and contributed to numerous funded projects, including EU FP7 KAP and STEEEP, EPSRC CaRB, and recent MECS and DEFRA SBRI initiatives. His teaching covers sustainability, energy modeling, power generation, and data analysis techniques.
The recent publications and projects demonstrate a consistent trajectory in energy data innovation, building and industrial energy efficiency, sensor-based monitoring, and socio-technical energy modeling. Themes include the use of energy data as a manufacturing variable, occupancy detection, and energy poverty assessment in developing regions.
- Chartered Engineer, Engineering Council (CEng), 2007
- Member, Institute of Measurement and Control (MinstMC), 2007
Neil Brown has supervised postgraduate students including John Rowlatt and Yashy Ragoo. He has secured significant research funding as PI and Co-I from EU, EPSRC, DEFRA, and MECS. His consultancy includes work for Watford Hospital and Halfords Ltd on energy systems. He is an active reviewer for journals such as Energy and Buildings and IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, and has served as referee for EPSRC and ESRC.
He is involved in the Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD) at DMU and has contributed to public policy advice for Leicester City Council. He has also been a visiting lecturer at institutions in Romania and Germany, focusing on cyber-physical energy systems.
