Dr. Neil Baird is an Associate Professor of English and Director of the University Writing Program (UWP) at Bowling Green State University (BGSU). He holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Nevada, Reno (2007), an MA in English from Idaho State University (2003), and a BA in Secondary Education (1999). His research focuses on writing transfer, discourse-based interview methodologies, and writing practices across disciplines and professional environments. He collaborates with institutions like the Elon Research Seminar to study how alumni and students apply writing skills in internships and early careers.
Key research interests include writing in non-academic settings (e.g., internships, workplaces), writing center practices, and the experiences of marginalized student groups. His work emphasizes empirical methods such as interviews, surveys, and ethnographic observations. As UWP Director, he bridges academic writing research with practical applications for students and professionals.
Recent studies include investigations into first-generation students' writing experiences in internships and how early career alumni use past writing knowledge in professional roles. He has co-edited special journal issues on the discourse-based interview and contributed to edited volumes on game heuristics in writing centers and networked research ethics.
