Dr. Neha Hui is a Lecturer in Economics at the University of Reading, specializing in economic history, development economics, and feminist economics. She examines the role of indentured labour migration from the Indian subcontinent to the Caribbean in shaping global capitalism, focusing on caste dynamics and post-emancipation policies. Her research also addresses gender and well-being, including domestic violence in Nigeria and bargaining power among marginalized workers in India.
Her affiliations include the Development Economics Research Cluster, Labour and Household Economics Research Cluster, and the Centre for Institutions and Economic History. She convenes the Development Economics module for postgraduate students.
Key research trends in her articles span historical political economy, gender studies, and the intersection of labour markets with social stigma. She critiques colonial-era policies and modern institutional failures affecting marginalized groups.
Dr. Hui holds a PhD in Economics (submitted 2017) and has explored topics ranging from infrastructural development's impact on firm efficiency to transaction cost analyses in sex work. Her work bridges historical analysis with contemporary policy implications.
