Negin Dahya is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology (University of Toronto Mississauga) and holds a Graduate Appointment at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information. She serves as Special Advisor for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the Office of the Vice-Principal, University of Toronto Mississauga. Her research focuses on digital media’s socio-cultural contexts, particularly among marginalized groups such as refugees, migrants, and girls of color. She employs postcolonial and feminist theories, emphasizing qualitative and community-based methodologies.
Education: B.A. in English Literature and Psychology (University of British Columbia); M.Ed. and Ph.D. in Education (York University). Prior roles include five years as Assistant Professor at the University of Washington iSchool and seven years at the National Film Board of Toronto’s media education department.
Research Interests: Intersection of digital media, cultural studies, and learning; refugee education and technology; anti-oppressive research practices; and participatory community research. Current projects include studies on refugees in sub-Saharan Africa, resettlement in Canada, and intergenerational cultural preservation through technology.
Funding & Awards: SSHRC Insight Grant (2023), Connaught New Researcher Award (2020), AERA Palmer O. Johnson Memorial Award (2018). Over 40 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on media education, refugee education, and technology.
Teaching: INF2243H (Histories of Information Technologies) at the Faculty of Information. Current supervision of two graduate students: Azhagu Meena S. P. and Nabila Chowdhury. Consultancies focus on refugee education and anti-oppressive research design.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates on projects involving refugee camps in Malawi, Seattle’s Digital Youth Lab, and Toronto-based migrant communities. Research emphasizes participatory methods and ethical transnational collaboration.
