Neal Halfon is a Professor of Pediatrics, Community Health Sciences, and Policy Studies at UCLA, holding joint appointments across the School of Medicine, School of Public Health, and Luskin School of Public Affairs. As Director of the UCLA Center for Healthier Children, Families and Communities, he leads initiatives addressing child and family health inequities through multidisciplinary approaches. His work integrates clinical care, public policy, and community engagement to promote life course health development.
Dr. Halfon earned his MD from UC Davis and MPH from UC Berkeley. His research focuses on pediatric health systems, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and the socio-economic determinants of child well-being. He has led major national studies including the 2000 National Survey of Early Childhood Health and co-developed frameworks like the Life Course Health Development model.
He serves on high-level advisory committees such as the National Research Council’s Board on Children, Youth, and Families, and has contributed to policy reforms through roles like co-chairing the National Children’s Study Health Services Working Group. His recent work emphasizes redesigning healthcare financing and delivery systems to prioritize developmental needs and equity.
Key areas of focus include immigrant health adaptation, pediatric chronic disease management, and measuring holistic child well-being through tools like the Early Development Instrument. Dr. Halfon advocates for systemic policy changes to address structural inequities impacting child health outcomes.
