Neal Ferris is a Professor of Archaeology and the Lawson Chair of Canadian Archaeology at the University of Western Ontario's Department of Anthropology. He holds a PhD from McMaster University (2006) and specializes in Indigenous archaeology, historical archaeology, and cultural heritage management. His research focuses on the archaeology of Iroquois communities, Great Lakes Indigenous societies, and the intersection of colonial histories with material culture. Ferris is committed to ethical practices in archaeology, emphasizing community engagement and sustainable methodologies.
Key research interests include the archaeology of borderlands, material culture analysis, and the reinterpretation of colonial narratives through Indigenous perspectives. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in Ontario and the Caribbean, notably at sites like Bath Stream in Nevis and Bkejwanong. Ferris advocates for transformative approaches to archaeological heritage management, challenging traditional ontologies and promoting inclusive frameworks.
His work spans over three decades, with publications addressing topics such as reburial practices, digital archaeology, and the governance of archaeological resources. Ferris is an award-winning faculty member, recognized for advancing archaeological theory and practice.
